Masand's movie review: London Dreams is a foolish film

London Dreams, directed by Vipul Shah, is a frustratingly foolish film about foolish people. It’s the kind of film whose central conflict could be instantly resolved if the characters concerned simply sat down and had a chat. Ajay Devgan plays Arjun, an aspiring pop-artiste obsessed with performing before a cheering crowd at London’s Wembley Stadium. He becomes jealous of his devoted best friend and band-mate Manu, played by Salman Khan, who is evidently more talented than him, but nowhere near as focused or ambitious.

Arjun decides to sabotage Manu when the latter’s popularity threatens to outshine his own. Now here’s where a heart-to-heart might have helped. Had Arjun explained what this Wembley fixation meant to him, Manu would have graciously backed off and let Arjun fulfill his childhood dream, and we’d have been spared the agony of watching the rest of this uninspiring drivel. But director Vipul Shah and his writers are in no mood to do us any favours.

London Dreams is packed with unintentionally hilarious gems like that back-story involving Arjun’s grandpa who committed suicide out of shame for getting stage-fright at a packed Wembley concert. Or the ridiculous incident at a show where Manu must take over vocal responsibilities after a blast of confetti practically chokes Arjun into silence.

The idiocy, however, doesn’t end there. In his attempts to shame Manu publicly, Arjun uses his connections to get Manu hooked onto drugs. A buxom groupie urges Manu to down a couple of tequila shots with her but replaces his salt with cocaine. Before you know it, Manu has acquired quite the appetite for the addictive white powder, practically chomping it down like dinner. Read more….

Indian tennis player Sania Mirza, who is in London to start the build-up to the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, came face to face with Salman Khan who was put up at the same hotel. Salman invited Sania and her family for a private screening of London Dreams, which was held at a West End hotel last evening. Salman’s brother, Sohail, and his close family and friends also attended the showing and gave the film a thumbs up. Read more…

London Dreams highlight: A musical entertainer

London Dreams is one of the most-awaited films of the year. A musical film directed by Vipul Shah, it boasts of an interesting cast. Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn are acting together again after Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, which was released ten years ago.Ghajini heroine Asin Thottumkal is in the female lead role. It is her second Hindi Film.

The story of London Dreamsrevolves around two childhood friends played by Ajay Devgan and Salman Khan. Ajay goes on to chase his dream of becoming a stage performer while Salman remains a child at heart, though his father is a music tutor.

Ajay ends up in London and forms a band with Asin, Rannvijay Singh and Aditya Roy Kapoor. He also brings Salman to his band. However, jealousy starts breeding between the friends. You have to watch the film to know the rest of the story. Read more….

"London Dreams is my best film" – Vipul Shah

Everyone’s aware that Rajkumar Santoshi was supposed to direct London Dreams initially, before Vipul Shah took over. But not many are aware that Vipul re-wrote and changed the entire script that Santoshi was to make. “I’ve just retained one sequence from that script,” the talented film-maker tells me.

The film-maker has a fantastic track record, with Aankhen, Waqt, Namastey London and Singh Is Kinng receiving a warm welcome from moviegoers. The viewers are bound to compare London Dreams with Vipul’s earlier works. “I am not worried. I feel I’ve only evolved as a storyteller with London Dreams. I strongly feel that this is my best film to date,” he says with utmost modesty. Read more….

Vipul Shah decided to give his favourite actor Akshay Kumar a break, and cast Ajay Devgn and Salman Khan instead in his new film, London Dreams.

The director of such films like Aankhen, Waqt: The Race Against Time and Namaste London hopes to churn out another hit in this film about a rock band.
