Kareena and Saif get candid about the recently released Kurbaan, the missing-in-action Vivek Oberoi and the controversy created by Shiv Sena over Kareena’s bare back movie posters.

What do you have to say when people compare Kurbaan to Fanaa or New York?
Saif: There are certain films that have similar themes, but I think Karan Johar is a very intelligent man. He will not try and make anything that has already been made. Yes, the movie is about terrorism, about fundamental Islam and modern Islam, but basically, it is a thriller and a great love story. What makes love stories special are the obstacles that the couple face and here religion is the obstacle.

Shiv Sena created a ruckus over the movie poster and painted a saree over Kareena’s bare back. What is your take on that?
Kareena: I don’t see anything wrong with the poster at all. It was shot very aesthetically and there is nothing vulgar about it. Rather it was more like a painting. I’m sure whatever needful action needs to be taken will be taken care of by Karan Johar and Dharma Productions.
S: We have to be sensitive as a lot of people are easily offended. But when we go out to make a film, we do it with a lot of pride, and we all have our conscience and our families to think about first. The entire film industry is in a state of shock. Believe me, I was inundated with calls from reputed film-makers and distributors, all wanting to know one thing: Why didn’t ‘Kurbaan’ fetch an initial?

‘Kurbaan’ had everything going in its favour…

Karan Johar has an impeccable track record as a film-maker. Every film produced by Karan has had a potent start at the ticket window.

Saif Ali Khan’s status, after ‘Love Aaj Kal’, has been at an all-time high.

The Saif – Kareena combo had hit headlines since the time they made their relationship public. The combo looked great.

UTV, the global distributors of ‘Kurbaan’, had promoted the film extensively.

Solo release status. ‘Kurbaan’ had no major opposition to contend with. Naturally, everyone expected ‘Kurbaan’ to start with a bang for the above-mentioned five reasons. Read more….

Review: Kurbaan is Arlington Road meets Fanaa

You are not quite sure after watching Kurbaan what exactly the motive behind making the film is. Was it designed to be a thriller? Then, in the almost 2hrs and 40minutes of its running time, it’s too long and dips at various points to be able to thrill you enough.

Was it supposed to be a love story? Then it fails on that count because the ‘lovers’ in the film come across as shallow. Was the film supposed to be a comment on global terrorism? Then it’s a haphazard one, raising questions (old ones at that) and not bothering to give any answers.

Actually, Kurbaan is a mish-mash of all of the above, and with a seduction scene and ‘main badla loonga’ angle thrown in, reminds one of the formulaic films made in the 80s.

Ehsaan Khan (Saif) teaches in a Delhi college, where Avantika (Kareena) is the psychology professor. Khan pursues Avantika like a lovelorn schoolboy – you have Saif mouthing some of the cheesiest dialogues and Kareena preening and pouting to them – and the two even make-out in the staffroom. Talk about setting a bad example.

Cheesy Khan impresses Psycho professor over cups of coffee and when she gets an offer to teach in a university in the US, he proposes marriage. He’s ready to ‘sacrifice’ his life in India so she can go to the US with him. Read more…

Bombay HC allows release of 'Kurbaan'

The Bombay High Court Thursday declined to stay release of film “Kurbaan”, due to be out Friday, but sought the responses of filmmaker Karan Johar and actors Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor to a petition terming two of its songs “vulgar”.

A division bench of Chief Justice Swatanter Kumar and Justice A. M. Khanvilkar slated the next hearing for Jan 14, 2010.

Petitioner Mohammed Ali demanded that the film’s release be stayed or the film be released after deleting the two objectionable songs. The division bench declined both pleas. Read more…

'Kurbaan' set to splash across 1,700 screens

This love story has more than blood on it. Kurbaan has close to Rs 50 crore (including cost of production , print and marketing) riding on it. It is a film which comes from the Dharma Productions banner (read Karan Johar), which is fast becoming synonymous with box-office success, and has advertising creative head Rensil D’Silva as debutante director. Now, its presenters, UTV Motion Pictures is going all out with a huge worldwide splash, come Friday , releasing the film across more than 1,700 screens globally, of which 1,500 are in India, with the rest split across 24 countries. “With 1,300 physical prints and 800 digital ones, this film is the biggest release ever for any Hindi film,” says CEO, UTV Motion Pictures , Siddharth Roy Kapur.

Karan Johar has been promoting this love story set against the backdrop of global terrorism. Kareena plays Avantika, a teacher from a University in Delhi, who moves base to New York due to a personal emergency. During this period, she meets a professor — Ehsaan Khan, played by Saif Ali Khan — they fall in love and get married. All hell breaks loose when a series of incidents suck Avantika and Ehsaan into a vortex of danger and intrigue . “This film warrants a wide release, unlike say Wake Up Sid, and opening weeks collections are critical, which given the subject matter will hopefully ensure,” says producer and director Karan Johar.
