Santoshi's PREM KAHANI demolishes Madhur's JAIL!

The writing was on the wall for about a month and we had been highlighting the fact time and again about how Santoshi’s AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI would embark on a good start and prove more than a handful for the Bhandarkar directed JAIL. Unfortunately the people who were associated with JAIL failed to read the signals and did not up the ante in a proper manner, and continued with their uni-directional promotion of the Neil and Mugdha starrer. The emphasis was to focus on the ‘necessary’ bold Neil scene, while at the same time trying to underplay the allegation that it was deliberate and for publicity.

On the other hand Tips head honcho, Ramesh Taurani, spared no efforts to highlight the fact that his youthful AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI was a madcap though innocent rom com that had no pretentions about exposing something dark about the society. Neil opens up about his masturbation scene

Neil Nitin Mukesh is the first mainstream hero to have done a scene of masturbation in Madhur Bhandarkar’s Jail. Reliving the highly unconventional moments of on-screen realism Neil says, “Frankly if it was some other director I’d have said no. But knowing the way Madhur depicts explicit sexual scenes I said yes. We shot the masturbation sequence with 450 other actors on the set with me. All the other inmates are asleep when I do it. Now a lot of it has been cropped off. But we still see the character doing it. There’s just a suggestion of it now.”

A portion of the sequence was voluntarily removed from the film before it was presented to the censor board. Says Neil, “Honestly, after Madhur and I shot the masturbation sequence we found we had gone too far. It was too explicit. It was just not jelling with Indian concepts of aesthetics. So we decided to knock it off quite a bit by mutual consent. We just wondered if the flow of the narration would be hampered.” Read more….

Neil has shot a frontal nude believe it or not a masturbation scene for his upcoming Madhur Bhandarkar directed Jail. Frontal nudity by lead actor Neil Nitin Mukesh in his new film Jailmade headlines, but filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar now says he has blurred the scenes so as to make it watchable for all age groups.

“The film will shake up a lot of people and give a perspective to the common man who has never gone inside a jail. That is also the reason I wanted a U/A certificate for the film, as I want all age groups to watch the film,” Bhandarkar told IANS in an interview here.

“I have also moderated the swear words in it for the same reason and have blurred Neil’s frontal nudity so that the film becomes commonly visible,” he added.

Despite controversies surrounding the film courtesy Neil’s complete peel-off for his character, Bhandarkar’s Jail has got a universal adult certificate for the masses.

He also denies making reality-based films to win National Awards.

“Awards do give one a sense of encouragement and a feeling of achievement. But I don’t make films to win a National Award. As far as Jail is concerned, it will depend on what the jury thinks. It is too premature to talk about it,” said Bhandarkar.

“I am basically a very blessed person to have it all – critical acclaim, box office success as well as National Awards for my films. For me it’s a great moment when my films are appreciated and I just want the same for this one too,” added the director who won the honours for Chandni Bar, Page 3 and Traffic Signal. Read more…

Neil Nitin walks the ramp in prison wear, handcuffs

How about designer clothes for prisoners? “Not a bad idea,” says Bollywood actor Neil Nitin Mukesh who walked down the ramp Tuesday wearing a designer version of prison uniform along with handcuffs at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) in New Delhi.

The actor, who will be seen playing a prisoner in his forthcoming film “Jail”, was wearing designer Reynu Taandon creation — he flaunted an off white short kurta, pyjama with minimal black embroidery and sequins that added a dash of glamour to the outfit.

When asked about how he felt about wearing designer prisoner clothes, Neil said: “It’s different but nice. It’s not a bad idea to get Reynu to redesign the uniform for jail inmates.”

He was accompanied by co-stars Mugdha Godse and Manoj Bajpayee apart from director Madhur Bhandarkar — they all walked the ramp to promote “Jail”.

The actor pointed out how the designer had taken special care to add a bright yellow strip on the kurta’s sleeve – a symbol on the jail uniform that denotes lifetime imprisonment for a convict. Read more…

Jail: The war between director Madhur Bhandarkar and the censorboard

Last week, Madhur Bhandarkar had presented Jail for a Censor certificate. While it is common news, by now, that his film was granted a U/A certificate, what hasn’t come out so far is the heated argument that went inside the confines of the four walls. Situation had turned so ugly that during the 45 minutes debate with the Censor officials, Madhur threatened to follow the path of many of his contemporaries in Bollywood and henceforth make only candy floss films. Should films such as Bhandarkar's Jail, which deal with adult themes, be cleared for non-adult audiences?

The censor board has asked filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar to mute the sounds of a homosexual scene in his forthcoming film, Jail.

Unhappy with the board’s decision, Bhandarkar says such things are part of life and should be allowed to be reflected in a realistic portrayal of life in an Indian prison.

The Fashion director wanted a ‘U/A’ certificate for Jail; however, for this, he will also have to do away with a sequence showing frontal nudity filmed on lead actor Neil Nitin Mukesh.

Bhandarkar says his earlier film, Chandni Bar, had more explicit scenes, but that film was passed with an ‘A’ certificate. Read more…
