When you enter director Rajkumar Santoshi‘s office in Versova, north-west Mumbai, you don’t see any posters of his latest hit, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani .

Posters of his early films – Ghayal, Damini, Barsaat andAndaz Apna Apna — are showcased next to a portrait of Che Guevara, the Argentine doctor who became an icon of revolutionaries everywhere.

Santoshi was written off after consecutive failures –Family: Ties of Blood (2006) and Halla Bol (2008) — but has bounced back with his Ranbir Kapoor-Katrina Kaif starrer.

Will Ajab overtake Love Aaj Kal?

Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani has taken the nation by storm. It had a great start, a fabulous weekend, a solid Monday and most importantly, the film has stepped into the coveted Top Five openers (opening weekend) list. That’s a major achievement!

Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani is being loved and patronised by the youth in a big way, which only goes to prove that the youth and families represent a major chunk of movie-going audience today. You need to pitch the film to this segment. That’s what Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani producer Ramesh Taurani did, when he flagged off the promotional campaign of the film.

Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani is faring exceptionally well across the country and I am sure, the dream run will spill over to its second week as well.

The question is, will Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani overtake Love Aaj Kal, the biggest Hit of 2009 thus far? Or will it be at par? Or slightly less? Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani has fetched a very good start in U.K., is excellent in America and good in Australia, the three major markets. The film has cemented Ranbir Kapoor’s status in the international markets; the escalation in business in film after film proves it… Meanwhile, JAIL is a washout in U.K. It’s amongst the lowest openers of 2009 there.

A man isn’t even free to decide what he wants to do anymore. This is probably what is running in Rajkumar Santoshi’s mind right now. The director wants to do a film starring Shahrukh Khan or Sunny Deol but he’s being forced to make the sequel of Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani right away by the producers Tauranis.

Even though Santoshi wants to do something different, the market pressure may finally get to him and he will have to take Ranbir Kapoor’s dates for next year. While he denied the news at first stating that he never succumbs to market pressures, Santoshi added that he is being advised to do the sequel to Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani. Read more….

Santoshi's PREM KAHANI demolishes Madhur's JAIL!

The writing was on the wall for about a month and we had been highlighting the fact time and again about how Santoshi’s AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI would embark on a good start and prove more than a handful for the Bhandarkar directed JAIL. Unfortunately the people who were associated with JAIL failed to read the signals and did not up the ante in a proper manner, and continued with their uni-directional promotion of the Neil and Mugdha starrer. The emphasis was to focus on the ‘necessary’ bold Neil scene, while at the same time trying to underplay the allegation that it was deliberate and for publicity.

On the other hand Tips head honcho, Ramesh Taurani, spared no efforts to highlight the fact that his youthful AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI was a madcap though innocent rom com that had no pretentions about exposing something dark about the society. In a nut shell the audience knew that APKGK was a full on entertainment time pass flick, aimed mainly at the college gang. And did he succeed? Read more…

Review : Ajab Prem ki Gazab Kahani

Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani, a comedy set in a comic book universe, is a frustratingly uneven film. Some of it is genuinely funny and delightful and some of it is repetitive, and annoyingly tedious.

But even in its most limp moments, what keeps the film from derailing is its lead pair: Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif. There is such sizzle and beauty and unadulterated charm here that you really can’t look away.

The story, co-written and directed by Raj Kumar Santoshi, is set in a picturesque little town, which seems like a cross between Goa and Ooty.

Specifics are irrelevant because Santoshi isn’t aiming for realism here. This is a cheerfully artificial world, in which Prem, played by Ranbir, lives with his parents.

Prem is a 9th standard drop-out whose main job is being the President of the Happy Club. The happy club hopes to make people happy but mostly its members boast about doing nothing. Read more….
